Bezos launched Blue Origin, an aircraft manufacturer and suborbital space services provider, in 2000. Blue Origin's New Shepard spacecraft entered orbit in 2015 and successfully returned to Earth. In 2013, he paid $250 million for the biggest U.S. newspaper, The Washington Post, and he controlled a number of other businesses through his venture capital firm, Bezos Expeditions.
Blue Origin, Bezos' human spaceflight enterprise, was founded in September 2000. Bezos has long been fascinated by space travel and the extension of human life throughout the solar system. In 1982, he delivered his commencement address, which was followed by an interview with the Miami Herald in which he indicated a desire to create and develop hotels, entertainment parks, and colonies for humans in orbit. Bezos, 18 years old, has stated that he wishes to protect the planet from resource depletion and overuse. From 2003 to 2017, Rob Meyerson served as Blue Origin's first president.
Bezos won his first major honor in 1999, when Time magazine named him Person of the Year.
In 2008, he was named one of America's greatest leaders by U.S. News & World Report.
In 2008, Bezos received an honorary doctorate of science and technology from Carnegie Mellon University.
