National Stock Exchange, Ashishkumar Chauhan, MD & CEO
When Ashishkumar Chauhan took over as managing director and chief executive officer of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in late July, it felt like coming home. In fact, the former Managing Director and CEO of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) was part of the core team that founded the NSE in the early 1990s. He was instrumental in establishing the NSE as the country's leading contemporary stock exchange.
Mr Chauhan played a key role in building the NSE's first information technology infrastructure, which resulted in the replacement of open outcry trading with online, screen-based trading. He contributed to the creation of the Nifty-50, the most followed stock index on the NSE. A commercial satellite telecommunications network has been established for the NSE in the country, allowing stock trading on computer screens across cool homes and businesses across the country.
Mr Chauhan left NSE in 2001 to start his own business, which was funded by the Reliance Group. Later, he started working with Reliance Infocomm and eventually rose to the position of Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Reliance Group.
Mr. returned to the stock exchange field in 2009, this time as deputy chief executive of rival BSE, before becoming its managing director and chief executive in 2012. During his long tenure at BSE, he saw Asian stock exchanges grow into new areas such as currencies, commodities, equity derivatives, SMEs, start-ups, mutual fund and insurance policy distribution, spot markets and electricity trading. He is also credited with the successful initial public offering (IPO) of BSE, the first stock exchange to list in the country.
